I'm a native Californian and proud to be, but certainly would love to have a British accent. In my opinion, perhaps I'm biased, California is a very open state and accepting of people and their unique qualities, especially in the north. There's nothing wrong with loving and missing those things back home.

I suspect some people exaggerate whatever qualities they have as some unconscious way to prove they're this or that. Totally unnecessary. Being yourself is always the way to go :)

I found your site when researching the subject of marmite. I too am an expat, though I live down in New Zealand. I say 'yoh - gurt' instead of 'yog - art' these days, but I still have to have my English marmite. And don't diss a good old G'n'T - a fine upstanding drink for all.

Loved the bit about the elephant gun...

Similar to you, I have been offered the chance to move with work out there, and would love to hear any tips/reccomendations you can give!

I think you should keep token eccentricities. That way you get to be a little different without being a bloody stupid oaf. I personally think drinking gin and tonic on the veranda is a splendid idea. Good, English thing to do. I think learning to call lemonade Sprite is a wonderful idea too, since you don't end up with some god awful pink drink that way.

You hopefully get the point.

Oh, and that's two flags and one monach.
